Twenty20 Reading: Bluecoat students and staff commit to reading for 20 minutes every day.
Bluecoat Academy is proud to work with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club to launch our 'Twenty20 Reading' initiative. All Bluecoat Academy students are being urged to commit to reading for 20 minutes every single day, and the Academy, supported by Notts CCC, will reward those who do with a range of money-can't-buy prizes.
Prizes start after students show the have read for 20 minutes for 20 consecutive days (hence Twenty20). Then more and better prizes are up-for-grabs for those who read for 40, 60 and 80 consecutive days.
It doesn't matter what students read, but it must be the same text for 20 consecutive minutes - so short messages, posts or 'statuses' won't count.
The benefits of reading for 20 minutes every day are far greater than mere prizes, of course. All major academic studies highlight the crucial importance of reading for children's academic achievements and broader well-being.
The staff at Bluecoat are fully on-board and have committed to reading for 20 minutes every day, and sharing their experience with the students they teach or work with. We ask that parents come on-board too: nothing will encourage your children to read more than seeing you doing it. We ask that you sign the 'scorecoards' on which your children are recording their reading, and also that you talk to them about their reading as you do so. Positive associations with reading now will created life-long reading habits, which have been proven to be a key indicator of success and well-being throughout life.
Twenty20 Reading is just one of the ways we are promoting positive reading habits in the Academy. For more information about reading, please contact Literacy Coordinator Abi McGowan on firstname.lastname@example.org
